I recently had to grab a storage unit for about a week due to lease start/end dates. I worked with Edd(ie?)y and he was so friendly and quick that I actually wanted to leave a review. Self-Storage is run efficiently and always has quick, mindful solutions to any problems I have had with my unit. The steps taken for extra security make me feel comfortable and safe storing my property until I return to Chicago. I also really appreciate being able to access my unit late at night even after the receptionist is no longer on duty, because I would often work late and would need to set something in storage later in the evening.

Excellent storage space with easy access

Moving from a 6 bedroom house in the suburbs to a 3 bedroom condo required quite a bit of downsizing. When we realized we just weren't ready to part with enough stuff yet we sought storage. This facility was close to our condo, had hours that suited us and provided plenty of dollies, a huge elevator, ample parking...in short everything one needs. Staff were very helpful in deciding what space to rent and providing help as requested. Because we still haven't settled on what goes where I am frequently in and out and the facility is always clean and orderly. Never having used storage before I can't compare spaces, but so far this choice seems excellent.

Self Storage 1/Sheffield is the BEST! My initial search was done online - their site was so easy to navigate and the preliminary pricing was the most competitive. When I called to inquire further, I spoke to a rep who was polite, patient with all my questions and so very well informed. I received a formal estimate emailed within just a few hours after our conversation. When I committed to them, the formal process was simple and did not matter that I was 5 states and 870 miles away. Upon my arrival in town, I was greeted and treated like I had been a long time customer. The parking in the area was available and close. The front desk area was neat and organized. I was given a tour of the facility and it was well lit, immaculate and easily accessible both for me and for the movers that we were using. The first move of belongings to the storage unit was simple - the movers pulled their truck right into the bay and the elevator and carts were readily available. The one glitch I faced that day was my code did not work when I tried it the first time - without even having to leave the area I contacted the front desk and it was corrected within a minute. While the movers were working I noticed the manager going through the halls with a carpet sweeper. Midway through the month I received an email with instructions if I wanted to continue the rental for subsequent months but our rental was for one month only. The second move was from the storage unit to the new residence and again it was so easy for the movers. My check it out of the unit was also a one minute process. And I was made to feel like I had been a long time customer. If I have to use a storage facility in Chicago again it will be this one - even if it’s not the closest geographically. They are the BEST!

I needed a storage unit in a hurry and found this place. I booked one online and when I went in to get everything settled the girl working was very helpful (unfortunately I can't remember her name). She explained everything thoroughly then took me to my unit and showed me how to use the garage and elevators. The place was clean and well kept and had plenty of carts for moving things. I'd definitely go back here if I need to store anything again.

Terrific Storage Unit

Overall, the place is excellent. It is clean, easy to use, convenient to get up to units and plenty of easy to use carts to move stuff in an out. Also, it seems as though the interior of the building is well maintained, including the interior climate. The one complaint is that the light switch timer for my set of unit and those around me is broken. I informed Customer Service and they put another knob on the switch but it is stripped. Thus, to turn the lights on, I need to use a pair of pliers. Not ideal but it is a work around.

Love the employees but our unit is filthy as we got dirt from the building of the new addition and still are getting dirt we cleaned everything in our storage then they gave us plastic to cover the top of the unit which we’ve gone thru 2 of those and still dirt covers our things and it’s sucks having to pull stuff out and make sure the plastic still covers the top ( when we 1st moved in I was so happy it was so clean now not happy about the flim of dirt but we like our unit as it’s convince being on the 1st floor and the layout of the unit so we don’t want to switch as we have looked into this option

Didn’t appreciate the rate increases for long term customers.

The facility is convenient and well maintained, the staff was always friendly and helpful, but I really am upset about the way the long term customers who paid every month were given rate increases that resulted in them paying way over what new customers were charged. I’m the end we were paying 3+ more than new customers - after their initial deal ended.

Very helpful. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the after hours accessibility. The only thing that does bother me a bit, is that I have been a loyal customer and find that I'm paying more for my units than new customers. That is just not right. In all fairness, they do work with me when they do post an increase and I have to ask for it to be reduced. They do reduce, but I think long term loyal, pay on time clients like me should be the last resort for increases.

Self storage 1 have been my storage for more than six years and the service has been always been good, the storage space has been very well maintained. The renovation of the building was good nice upgrade. My only concern was that there was a period where the rates were jumping up one too frequently but it seems that this trend has been leveling lately and now it appears that they are competitive compared to other locations. So Self Storage 1 is still a recommendable storage for those who are looking for storage space

I was very happy with my experience at self storage. Only needed the unit for 4 months while I was abroad but anytime I had a question they were there to work with me. Wasn't super excited about the pricing but in the city to have a place as convenient as this one, you really get what you pay for. Great service and all the necessary tools. At times it can be a bit crowded with the 2 elevators but even at those times it wasn't unmanageable. If I need another unit in the future, I will be back!

My only criticism are the pass code locked entry system and the fact that, even with this, it's not 24 hours. Having to type in a long and difficult to remember password every time you want to open a door or use the elevator is a nuisance. Having this system in place and not being open 24 hours is a bigger one. If you have cameras everywhere and passcoded all the doors why can't I enter during the night?!

Generally I was satisfied. My only concerns were the yearly increases in the monthly fee which I felt were high. Also, I was told that I couldn't use the dumpsters in the back. It would be a big plus to be able to use the dumpsters (within reason, of course). Availability of a chair on each floor would also be helpful.

No Exceptions

The grace period to cancel is until the 6th of each month and I managed to be out of town and missed that date by 12 hours yet they were unwilling to make an exception and cancel that month's fee. Unfortunate way to end what had been a pleasant experience.

The guy (whose name escapes me at the moment) who answered my questions and then helped me select a unit is great, very friendly and helpful. The first time I came there was a lower price, I wish I knew reserving a unit at that price was an option because within a week or two the prices went up a lot. He still got me a better deal but I wish I knew about reserving at the lower price. It would also be nice if there was some sort of discounted price if we committed to a longer term. The facility is nice, plenty of carts and elevator access. I do wish there was some late-night access, but that seems to be hard to get at most places. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for storage.

I've been a customer here for awhile. Before the addition parking on the side of the building was readily available. Now there is difficulty when more then one person is there. Seems to me that money is by far the priority, which always comes at the expense of the consumer. My husband and I rent three spaces here. Eventually we will be moving out to a more convenient and accessible property.

A small number of people run this huge facility and they give everybody their full attention. This is not the kind of place where you walk in and there are people lounging behind the counter. They are proactive, honest, and willing to pitch a hand. For example, one of the managers offered to help me move a heavy piece when I needed a hand. You're not going to find that kind of service anymore.

I stored a couple things over the summer and they were kept just the way I left them. I was the only one with a key to the locker, so there was never a worry about anyone from the company going into my locker for any reason. Cleaning out basement

I had assumed that I would need to rent a van for this project. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that Self Storage 1 has a serviceable box truck, which one can use to move in without additional charge. The truck comes with two hand trucks. I canceled the rental reservation. There are a number of flatbed carts available to transport things from the loading area to your space. Our space is on the second floor. Second floor and above are directly accessible by elevator from the loading area. Roll on, roll off. Greg was extremely helpful and friendly. He showed me a variety of spaces, and was informative about details.
