Rochester City Guide
Not to be confused with the city of the same name in the state of New York, Rochester, Michigan is a small town with a population of 12,711 just outside of Detroit. But if you’re wondering whether there was a connection between the two, you wouldn’t be wrong. Many of the first settlers in Rochester, Michigan not only came from the NY counterpart but they named this town after that one. I guess after all that log cabin building, railroad track laying, and sugar beet crop planting they were too tired to think of a unique name.
The town’s annual “Rochester Hometown Christmas Parade” is the state’s biggest Christmas parade, with reportedly 1 million Christmas lights lit up around the downtown core. While you’re downtown, be sure to check out some great historic places, like Rollin Sprague Building (the oldest commercial building), the Opera House Building (which, funnily enough, never actually staged an opera, just dances and movies), and the Western Knitting Mills (at its peak it produced 100,000 pairs of gloves per year, making it the most prolific glove manufacturer in the world).
You know there’s nothing worse than trying to figure out what to do with all those Christmas lights once the season has passed, so consider renting a self-storage unit at one of the nearby storage facilities in Rochester, Michigan!
Rochester has several beautiful parks, including the largest one in the city, Rochester Municipal Park. Here you can walk the Paint Creek Trail, which takes you over to Lake Orion, play tennis, or listen to music at the outdoor auditorium. At the right time of year, you can also enjoy the Art & Apples Festival or the Music In the Park concert series.
Once you’ve moved to Rochester, Michigan, you can brag to all your friends that this is the hometown to Madonna (the pop singer, not the mother of Jesus), Eminem (the pop singer, not the candy), and Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, the artists who created the original movie poster for Star Wars.
And do you what Madonna did with her conical brassieres, Eminem did with his unusable rap lyrics, and the Hildebrandts did with all their paint supplies? That’s right—stashed all this stuff at a Rochester, Michigan self-storage facility!
It’s important to be familiar with the surrounding area around a storage facility and the additional services available to assist you either moving into or out of a self storage unit.
